Maybe you&#8217;ve heard stories from older siblings or friends about \u201chow much easier it was back then,\u201d leaving you worried about what lies ahead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here&#8217;s the truth: <\/span><b>while GCSEs do evolve to reflect modern education, they\u2019re not designed to be impossible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Examining the Evidence<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the changes that GCSE exams have undergone due to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/SN06962\/SN06962.pdf\"><b>2015 reforms<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we can say that <\/span><b>getting higher grades requires more effort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because you have to revise for preferably <\/span><b>8 to 10 subjects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all at once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, on the plus side, you have <\/span><b>access to many resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prepare for the exams. This shift can feel challenging, but it\u2019s a fairer way to assess real-world skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Perceived_Difficulty_of_GCSE_Exams\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perceived Difficulty of GCSE Exams<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of \u201charder\u201d GCSEs primarily originates from how students define exam complexity, which is relatively <\/span><b>subjective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When a student says, \u201cThis 2023 paper was so much harder than previous ones,\u201d does this mean that the exam board deliberately designed more complicated questions or that the student was underprepared?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth mentioning here that all exam boards in the UK must comply with the standards set by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ofqual\"><b>Ofqual<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a regulatory body in charge of qualifications, examinations and assessments in the UK. Let\u2019s review two major changes in GCSE exams.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Change_in_Grading_Scale\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change in Grading Scale<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grading scale in the UK used to define a test taker&#8217;s performance using <\/span><b>alphabetical values ranging from A to F<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The test taker must at least get a <\/span><b>C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pass the exam. However, in the new grading scale, the test taker\u2019s performance is indicated by numerical values ranging from <\/span><b>1 to 9<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the new grading scale, students must get at least a grade of <\/span><b>4 (standard pass) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to pass the exam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have elaborated more on the grading system in the UK. This shift fundamentally changed how students are assessed.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Modular exams:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the past, GCSE subjects were broken into smaller units called modules and students\u2019 understanding of the modules was tested throughout the school year through various and frequent exams.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students needed to learn and retain <\/span><b>smaller chunks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for modular exams, and they didn\u2019t have to remember everything at once at the end of the school year. However, they had to take many exams, which was corrosive both for the school and the students.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Linear exams: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the reforms implemented in <\/span><b>2015<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, GCSE exams are now held at the end of the school year in May\/June. This means students are assessed in a set of comprehensive final exams <\/span><b>without any mid-course exams or modular retakes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The upside of linear exams is that students can focus on sustained learning rather than worry about continual exams.
