A cover letter goes a long way in a science teacher’s career success. On the one hand, it allows the tutors themselves to analyse if they are fit to apply for a job offer. On the other hand, a teacher’s cover letter gives the employer a clear image of your suitability for the position. So, it is well worth it to know how to write an effective science teacher cover letter. In the remainder of the article, I will tell you how to write your own science teacher cover letter. I also give you a free cover letter template in case you need to create a cover letter right away.

  • Customise your qualifications for the job applications.
  • Elaborate on the skills that make you the best candidate for the job.
  • Bring specific examples of using your skills and the results.
  • Express your enthusiasm for working as a science teacher.
  • Keep the cover letter brief and precise.
  • Write the cover letter in the standard format using the best tips in this article.

Cover letter vs. resume

The first difference between a resume and a cover letter is the structure. In a resume, you outline your science education, experience, skills, and other qualifications in one or maximally two pages. However, in a cover letter, you explain why a given job is the right job for you as a science teacher in three or four short paragraphs. Therefore, a cover letter is shorter and more specific than a resume. In other words, you can send your resume to different hiring managers without making any major changes. But, ideally, you write customised cover letters for each new position to justify why you are the right person for this particular job.

Have you written your resume yet? If not, do not miss our article on “How to write a tutor resume.” by following these tips, you can write a professional tutoring resume.

How can I write a science teacher cover letter?

Part 1: the applicant’s information

Like a resume, a cover letter starts with the science tutor’s contact information and location. You should mention the date of sending the cover letter under your information as well. Then, if you want to post the cover letter, you must also mention the recipient details. But, if you send an email, a subject line describing the job title and the recipient’s surname would be enough.

Part 2: the employer’s information

After the contact details, you address the recipient of the letter. You should find out who this person is and write their surname. This shows you already have some information about the company. If you cannot find the name, you can address the person by “Dear hiring manager.”

Part 3: introduction to job application

The first paragraph of the cover letter explains how you have heard of the job offer and why you are applying. The first paragraph is actually like the introductory paragraph of a short essay where you reflect on the offer. So, do not go over details about why you are the right person for the job. One strong sentence about relevant skills or experience for the job will keep the reader interested. And it is up to you to choose that sentence. For instance, if you have a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in science, you can impress potential employers by pointing out your education.

Tutor qualifications in the UK

“Becoming a tutor in the UK offers a fulfilling opportunity to positively impact students’ academic journeys while pursuing their passion for education. To embark on this rewarding path, follow these practical steps.”

Part 4: the body of the cover letter

Let’s get to the heart of the matter. In the next two or three paragraphs, you should explain why you are the missing piece of the puzzle in the company. In the first body paragraph, you describe your possession of the transferable skill set required to do the job. For the second paragraph, you expand on how you had practised these skills in a similar position. In the third paragraph, you give reasons for how these skills can help you make a difference in the prospective position.

Although you may have what it takes to do a job well, you may lack the ability to communicate with them. In other words, if you tend to underestimate your achievements, the article on “How To Showcase Achievements In Your Cover Letter” can help you highlight your skills in the cover letter.

Part 5: concluding the cover letter

In the closing paragraph, you restate your interest in the position and thank the hiring manager in advance for considering you for the job. The conclusory paragraph is also a good place to hint that you think highly of the company, but you need to be subtle about it. You do not want to make a first impression as a flatterer. Lastly, you write a friendly yet formal closing for the cover letter and sign your full name afterwards.

Things to consider in a teacher cover letter

In order to look more professional, you should consider the following in your cover letter.

  • Subject line: your teacher cover letter must start with the subject line, indicating the position you are applying for as well as your name.
  • Tone: maintain a formal tone throughout the letter or email.
  • Language: you can grab the hiring manager’s attention by using industry-specific terms.
  • Length: Say only what is necessary to show your suitability for the job.
  • Proofread: take time to proofread the cover letter. As a writer, I can assure you that you will find several typos or punctuation mistakes. Although these errors might seem trivial, they can ruin a good cover letter.
  • Attachment: the cover letter is a supplement to the resume. So, remember to attach the resume and ask the recipient to find it.

Science teacher cover letter examples

Let’s say I want to apply for a teaching position in science at an online tutoring platform like Ostado. Besides writing an extensive resume, I want to prepare a science teacher cover letter based on the above tips to maximise my chances of employment as a science tutor. My cover letter would be something like this:

Subject line: Application for science tutor – Majid Zare

Dear Mr. Farahani

I heard about Ostado’s vacancies for science teachers in my job search on LinkedIn. As a science teacher with 3 years of experience, I can fulfil your expectations and deliver customer satisfaction.

I am currently working at the Success Way Tutoring Institute as a science tutor, but I would like to experience the convenience of online tutoring as a part-time job as well. As a science teacher at Success Way, I have managed to increase the students’ GPA by 0.5. My reviews indicate I have effectively taught complex scientific concepts by obtaining various teaching methods based on my students’ learning styles. Additionally, I can visualise different concepts (e.g., in Earth Science) using 3D models, thanks to my technological and computer skills.

The science teaching position on your online platform is especially interesting to me because it gives me the flexibility I need to maintain the right balance between my career and personal life. Also, thanks to my computer skills, I can integrate several digital tools into the teaching process to increase the productivity of my classes. I have explained more about my qualifications in my resume, which is attached to this email.

In the end, I would like to be an active member of your science teachers’ team and help Ostado’s platform elevate the quality of online education.

I look forward to having an interview to further discuss the position. Thank you for your consideration of my application.

Yours sincerely,

Majid Zare

Should a teacher have a cover letter?

It is highly recommended for a science teacher to have a cover letter since it significantly increases the chances of being hired by potential employers. Additionally, it gives the teacher an opportunity to show their interest in the profession and justify why they are the best candidate for the position.

Should I send a cover letter with my resume?

Generally, it is a good idea to send out resumes together with cover letters. However, unless the employer requires a cover letter, it is not necessary.

Should I mention everything in my cover letter?

No, the full description of your capabilities and scientific knowledge goes into the resume. In the cover letter, you only mention the skills that make you eligible for the given job.

My story as an English content producer and copywriter began ironically in the 7th grade when I failed English. My parents, concerned about my educational prospects, enrolled me in an English course, and thanks to motivating teachers, the fun learning environment, and, of course, my own efforts, I grew fond of English as the subject to pursue in university. I studied English Language and Literature for my BA, and my interest in the subject increased even further. After graduating with a BA degree from the University of Isfahan, I continued my education in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). I received my MA degree in TEFL from the Isfahan University of Technology. All the while, I was engaged in expanding my knowledge of the culture of native English speakers by reading novels, listening to English podcasts, and watching English movies. Consequently, my efforts brought me to where I am now: a skilled English content producer. I hope my content helps you make better decisions.
